Blue Screen of Death
This morning, when I turned on my PC, I was greeted by the Blue Screen of Death. I shut down and restarted several times, only to be rewarded with a message about a fatal booting error. It happened so suddenly - it was operating normally just yesterday. I think I’m still in shock, I can usually see a PC fatality coming a mile away.
Thank goodness I have friends in IT and was up and running on a different hard drive within an hour. The bad news: I lost four or five articles that were written with the intention of getting me through the Thanksgiving holiday. I learned a very valuable lesson about backing my stuff up.
Thankful
In spite of my huge debt load, my failing PC, and the fact that it happens to be a very dreary day here in the Midwest, I have much to be thankful for. A few months ago I started a “thankful journal” to give my life some perspective. Every night, right before I go to sleep, I make a list of no fewer than five things that I’m thankful for. Some things show up repeatedly (my partner, my family, my dog) others are unique to the day. For example, just last night I wrote that I was thankful for the wind that blew most of the leaves out of my yard.
Earlier this week, I read through my past journal entries and afterward I felt very at peace (no small feat considering my mind is constantly ‘on’). I have made lots of mistakes - and I will continue to make them - but in the lottery of life, I really lucked out. I have lots to be thankful for - I bet you do, too.
During this time of thanksgiving, its nice to take a moment to make a list of the things you are thankful for. Share it with loved ones or keep for yourself and pull it out after an especially bad day.
Go forth and be thankful!
