BankerGirl’s Week in Review 2.15.08
I sat down to do my taxes tonight and discovered that I left a W-2 at the office. Grrr! I guess I better venture out into the freezing cold to retrieve it - but before I go, the following is a list of articles and posts I’ve enjoyed over the past week or so:
Taxes are on my mind. An accountant and new blogger, Chad has shared a couple of funny client stories at his new site (I am pretty certain that I bank some of the people he is writing about - there can’t be that many idiots in the world). I especially got a kick out of “What are not deductions for your taxes.” I’m bummed that I can’t count Gretchen (my dog) as a dependent.
Earlier this week, JLP at AllFinancialMatters asked for reader’s thoughts on reverse mortgages. They can be a nice tool for the right situation, but personally, I am not a fan - mostly for the reasons listed in this piece at Kiplinger.
Karen Datko at Smart Spending wrote about the newest casualties of the sub-prime mortgage mess in her piece, “Pets are becoming victims of mortgage crisis.” As an animal lover, this just breaks my heart. Shelters are already over-crowded with furry critters as it is.
There was quite a debate at freemoneyfinance about this post on couples that are struggling on six figure incomes. I was a little late to the party, but you can read my two cents near the very bottom of the comments section.
I put some feelers out for a new job at the end of December because my work situation took a strange turn. I’m just now getting some calls for interviews and the dreaded “Thanks for applying, but…” email. As such, “Job Applicants Are Customers, Too” from a trio at Gallup really struck a chord with me.
Finally, this New York Times article by Patricia Cohen hones in on something that’s been bugging me for awhile. Are we getting stupider, or is reality TV just a capturing Americans as they have always been?
Stumble it!

Thanks for the mention, BankerGirl. The photo I included with the pet post was of my beloved Kordell, who died in December.
And thanks for directing your readers to Creative Accountant. That post was hilarious.

I thought you were a TurboTaxian too!
With TurboTax it can download your W2 info if you used it last year as well.
On your Stupid topic: the Quote I love is; “No one has Ever gone broke under-estimating the intelligence of the American People”
There have always been stupid (and I am NOT talking about intelligence either!) they are just now given cameras and are asked to eat strange things!

Taxes have been on my mind too, but I finished them (yay!) and submitted (bigger yay!) through Turbo Tax Online. The IRS accepted my return this past week (biggest yay!) and I should be getting my refund no later than Feb 26. Unfortunately, I didn’t plan my taxes well this year (my first full year owning a home and having income from a roommate) so I’m getting a huge refund. Am making adjustments so that won’t happen next year, however it makes for a nice chunk of change to throw at that debt!
